As the economy gathers steam, the domestic financial services sector is on a hiring spree and IIT Bombay has seen 40 per cent jump in campus placements, a senior university official said today.
"All of them have recruited from us this year," chairman of placements at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) Ravi Sinha said.
IIT-B students have received 70 offers from 11 companies in the financial sector this year, Sinha said, adding "last year, the numbers were 40 per cent less."
Sinha said despite financial engineering being seen in a negative light after the global financial crisis, students continue to show interest in financial firms, partly due to the presence of alumni in such firms.
The post-slowdown period also saw an increase in interest from management consulting firms with over 20 companies making 70 offers. "Last year, companies were having a difficult time and we saw only one student recruited per company from IIT-B but this year, each company has made three to four offers," he said.

US Inc eyes staff at pre-meltdown mark
New York: More than half of large US firms surveyed that cut down on their staff last year, are planning to rebuild their workforces to get back to pre-recession levels, a survey by IT consultancy Accenture has revealed.
The survey titled 'High Performance Workforce' says 54 per cent of large businesses among the US companies surveyed by the consultancy firm, plan to hire people over the next two years to take their employee strength back to pre-recession levels.
Also, just 13 per cent of executives plan to reduce their employee base over the next 12 months, it revealed.
The survey confirmed that companies were shifting their focus away from cost control and returning to growth. The percentage of US firms focused primarily on cost control will decrease from 41 per cent in mid-2009 to 18 per cent in 2011, read the report.
"The percentage of US companies focused primarily on investment in growth-oriented activities, such as hiring, would increase from 24 per cent today to 37 per cent within the next 12 months," the survey stated.
The survey was conducted among senior executives across around 117 large businesses in the US.
However, as companies focus on growth, a shortage of high-quality skills may be a cause of concern for many businesses. Around 15 per cent of the total US executives surveyed, described the overall skill level of their workforces as industry-leading, the survey noted.
"A lack of relevant skills may present a hurdle for companies as they position themselves for growth," Accenture Talent & Organisation Performance practice managing director David Smith said.
"Companies need to rethink how they equip employees with the skills required to be competitive today. They must also consider new strategies for hiring and developing untapped talent, currently available in the market,"Smith added.

UPSC to recruit Assistant Public Prosecutors soon
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has assured Delhi High Court that it will soon conduct recruitment to the posts of Assistant Public Prosecutors so that trial in lower courts will not get affected.
Appearing before a division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Manmohan, the counsel for the commission submitted that the NCT government has sent a request for filling up vacancies to 44 such posts and that the commission sought a clarification as it found some deficiencies.
The bench directed the city government to submit the clarification within 10 days so that the posts will be filled as early as possible.
Earlier this month, the court sought response from UPSC as to why the vacancies for the posts of Public Prosecutors have not been filled up for the past several years.
The bench had taken suo motu cognisance of a letter written by a group of undertrials that due to delay in trial process they end up spending more time in jail than the prescribed sentence under the law.
Later, it came to the court's knowledge that due to shortage of Public Prosecutors in courts, the hearing of cases got delayed as one PP was assigned cases at more than one court.
The High Court also sought an affidavit from the government with regard to the post of Director of Prosecution and the posts of Additional Public Prosecutors (APP) following a submission made by Amicus Curia Rajiv Virmani.
